“A Walk Through Psalm One”

Hi! I want to thank you for joining me today as we look into God’s Holy Word to determine how we can become
more faithful followers of Christ, and better witnesses to the world.

Heavenly Father, I come before you, in the name of Jesus, asking that you speak though me, and open our heart and
our ears to receive your word. Speak to us Lord, and prepare our heart for your coming. AMEN

Today I want to take a few moments to walk through one of my favorite Psalms,  Psalms one. Listen to the
words of this Psalm.

Psalms 1:1-6
1.   Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the
seat of the scornful;
2.   But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3.   He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its  season, Whose leaf also shall

not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.
4.   The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5.   Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6.   For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalms one, was written by David. David was the author of many of the Psalms, but even though he penned the
words, it was the Holy Spirit that gave him the words to write.

There is a lot we can learn from this Psalm and much that will help us in our Christian walk if we but listen, learn
and obey what it says.

Psalms one and verse one states:

1.   Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path  of sinners, Nor sits in the

seat of the scornful;

David begins by saying that those who refuse to listen to ungodly counsel, and chooses instead to walk in or
seek Godly counsel, will be blessed. Another word for blessed is to be happy, so we can assume here that he is
saying; in order to find true happiness, we must be careful that we do not to listen to wrong counsel, but should
always seek and cherish Godly counsel, and Godly instructions.

Unfortunately in our society today, there is more ungodly counsel available, than there is Godly counsel.
Ungodly counsel can be found anywhere one looks.  The world is full of ungodly counsel and people who are ready
and willing to express this counsel to us and our children. As a result, the world is full of hurting people, people who
are confused and dying in their sins, because they do not know the right way to go or how to get there.

David goes on to say in verse one that happiness, or blessedness comes by refusing to sit in the seat of the
scornful. This means that one should not be judgmental towards others, nor should they try to hurt others by scorning
them, or by trashing them with our speech. When one is Scornful of others, they cause bad feelings in the heart of
their fellowmen. As a result, others don’t want to associate with them, resulting in their not having friends, and their
becoming a very lonely person, with little to look forward too. So, instead of being scornful, one should love their
enemies, and do good to them who hurt you. One should pray for their enemies, and do everything they can to show
the love of Christ to everyone. By doing so, you will have friends, and God will upon you with favor and bless you
with happiness.

       David than goes to say in verse two, the blessed, or truly happy are those who delight is in the law of the LORD;
and meditate on it day and night.

When one refuses to listen to ungodly counsel, and chooses Godly counsel and Godly people to associate with,
when they dig into God’s Holy word, to find what he desires for their life, seeking His wisdom, then doing it, they will
find that they are extremely happy. If one diligently seeks God, they will find him. When they draw closer to him, he
draws closer to them. Therefore, their heart is filled with joy and they are truly blessed.

Then David went on to say, when one delights in the Law of the Lord, the Holy Word, and when they meditates
on it day and night, or in other words, when they read it, study it, and live it, they shall become as it says in verse

3.   He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall

not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Those who seek God, finds Him, and those who follow Him will be planted into the foundation of God and rooted
fast to Jesus. By being so rooted, when the storms of life come, when the winds of strife blow, and when we are
faced with sickness, death, or other problems in life, we can withstand them knowing we are in God’s care and God
is with us. Then as we are forced to face the storms of life, we can still bear fruit for Jesus.

Some of the greatest testimony and witness I have ever heard, has come from folks with unbearable pain, and
terrible suffering. I have seen folks hurting so bad that they could hardly talk, folks dying slow and painful deaths, yet
they gave praise to God, and such a strong witness, that I was humbled, because I was so weak.

Because these folks placed their faith and trust in Jesus, because they reused to listen to ungodly counsel, and
chose to listen only to Godly counsel and believed God’s Holy Word, they continued to bear good fruit, which did not
wither, until the day they died. For many of them, even after they died their fruit was still touching the lives of those
who witnessed their faithfulness, and the strength God gave them as they suffered.

Verse four says:

4.   The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

All that the ungodly has is their self. Because they accepted ungodly counsel, and refused to heed or grab hold
of Godliness and the Godly counsel available through God’s Holy Word, they suffer alone, having no hope, no joy
and nothing to comfort them in their pain.

Some time ago, I took a gentleman to the Hospital for surgery. While sitting in in the waiting area, a young man
and his wife came in. Apparently the young man was there for surgery as well. I found out latter that it was for his
back. He was in terrible pain. What surprised the most, was how he was responding to the pain. He lay on the floor
rolling around moaning and cursing, using some of the foulest language I’ve ever heard. I wanted to go to him and
pray, but with the words he was using, I’m not sure God would have even been listening, so instead I prayed for his
salvation, and asked God to touch his heart.

This is the difference between a righteous and an unrighteous man. When a righteous man has problems, they
can turn to God, and he is there to bring them comfort, whereas the Ungodly man has no-one to turn to and must
suffer alone. Because they choose to believe  ungodly counsel, instead of seeking and listening to Godly counsel,
they have nothing to be happy about here, and when their life finally comes to a close, they will have to face eternal

Over the years, I have sat with both the Godly and the Ungodly when they have breathed their last breath, and
there is big a difference between them. I heard it said once that an undertaker can tell a difference between the
Godly and the Ungodly when they work on a body preparing it for burial. I asked an undertaker and was told that
there is a difference. Someone who was a God Fearing Christ following person, is more relaxed than someone who
was an ungodly, evil person. I do know from my own personal observation, when they die, a God fearing Christian
usually dies peaceful, whereas the evil person often has terror in their eyes, as if they are seeing hell the moment
they die.

       Verse five says

5.   Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

When they stand before the Great White Throne of Judgment, the ungodly will not be able to stand. The reason
is, they will be there before a completely Holy and righteous Judge, and because they are an unconfused sinner,
they will be on their faces, crying out for forgiveness, begging God to spare them, and asking for His mercy, but for
them it will be too late. Their opportunity to have eternal life will be gone. Their opportunity to be forgiven will be past.
Their fate will already be sealed, and all the begging in the world will not change their outcome. They will be doomed
for hell.

I’ve had folks say that God is too good to send anyone to hell. They believe that God because he loves
everyone, will allow everyone into heaven. Unfortunately this is not the case. It’s true that God will send no-one to
hell. The reason he will not send anyone to hell, is because the unsaved send themselves there. God gives man
every opportunity to be saved and as long as they have breath, they can come to him, accept his saving Grace, be
forgiven for their sins, and have eternal life. But, when one chooses to listen to Ungodly Counsel and refuses to listen
to Godly counsel, counseling them to follow Jesus and accept his free gift of eternal life, they are themselves
choosing to spend their eternity in hell where they will suffer for ever.

David ends Psalm one by saying

6.   For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

There is nothing hidden from God. He sees everything we do, and he knows every thought we have. He even
knows why we do the things we do. As a matter of fact, God  understands us better than we understand ourselves.
God knows when we confess something to him, if we really mean it or if we are only doing lip service. He knows
when we ask Jesus into our heart, if we are sincere and really want to receive him. He knows every thing we’ve
done, and he also knows whether we have sought forgiveness for it.
Many are doing things they know is not right, committing sins the bible tells us are abomination to God and
thinking they are hiding it from him because they are hiding it from us, but the fact remains, you cannot hide anything
from God. Secondly some seem to thing that listening to Ungodly Counsel and doing things that are sinful is the only
way to find happiness. I want you to know that true happiness comes from following and obeying God.

Blessed is the man who does not walk in in the Counsel of the Ungodly. Those who confess their sins and ask
Jesus into their heart, and are sincere in their walk with him will find true happiness here on earth, and especially so
when they enter the kingdom of Heaven and have eternal life.

Unfortunately, the ways for the ungodly will perish. They might think they are having fun here, they may have
riches beyond anything you or I could ever imagine, but if they do not have a true relationship with Jesus, they will
spend their eternity in hell where there will be weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, and where just a single drop of
water on their tongue would be a blessed relief.

It seems like a simple decision to me. We can choose Godly Counsel, and give our life to Jesus, maybe we will
have to do without a little here, and maybe we won’t be a popular as the ungodly are, but in our heart we will have
peace, and happiness, knowing the moment we close our eyes in death, we will be forever with Christ in heaven. Or
we can choose to believe Ungodly counsel, and party, do all manors of sinful things, have friends who bring us
drugs, alcohol and are free with all manors of sinfulness, but in our heart we will be hurting, lonely, and with no hope.
And then comes death with nothing to look forward too, except eternal separation from God and everlasting Torment.

Brothers and sisters, you must choose what counsel you will receive. There are preachers standing in the
pulpits of our churches giving ungodly counsel. There are Professors in our seminaries and Christian Schools giving
ungodly counsel. These people are just as bad as the Drug dealers on the street corner. Actually they are worse,
because folks believe they have answers from God and fail to check what they teach against what God says in his

I urge you to compare everything you hear with what God says. You must study to show yourself approved unto
God, and cling to the things he tells us in his Word. Just because a person stands in a pulpit, or preaches on the
radio or TV does not mean they are Godly. Far too many preachers, as well as church members have a form of
godliness, but that’s all they have. They believe what they want and throw the rest of the bible away.

I beg of you, take your Christianity seriously. Get into Gods word yearning, learning, and discerning what he
desires for you to know and do. Check what I say, or what any other preacher says against what the bible says, and
refuse to listen to anyone unless they are saying the same things the bible teaches. By doing so, you will be blessed,
and God will make you extremely happy and content in the knowledge that someday soon you will be with him in
heaven. AMEN
