“The Last Days”

Greetings in the name of Jesus! Hi, I'm Don Guthrie and I want to thank you for joining me today as we look
into God’s Holy Word to learn how we can become a better witnesses to the world and a more faithful followers of
Christ.

Father, I come before you this day in the name of Jesus. I ask that you anoint me with your Holy Spirit that I
might speak the words you would have me speak. I ask that you open our ears and our heart to hear your message
and to understand your Holy Word. In Jesus name I ask these things: AMEN.

Today I’m going to be continuing with my series on the last days as we look again at the book of Matthew
chapter twenty-four, at verses three through fourteen.

Matthew 24: 3-14
3.   And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying,
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of         the
    end of the world?
4.   And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5.   For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6.   And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these
things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7.   For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be
famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8.   All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9.   Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of
all nations for my name's sake.
10. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one
    another.
11. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all
nations; and then shall the end come.

For a number of weeks I’ve been speaking on the last days and the signs we are to be looking for that point to
the coming of Christ. My hope in these messages is to show you from the bible that Jesus is indeed coming soon
and to help you to prepare for his coming. Last week I spoke from Matthew 24, 4-5, and Today I want to speak on
verses six and seven

According to Jesus, in the last days, as a sign to show us that he is coming soon, there would be wars and
rumors of wars. It’s interesting to note that from the time Jesus spoke these words, there have been wars raging
around the world almost continually. It‘s been said that in the two thousand years since Jesus was born, there have
been only 400 years when a major war was not being fought somewhere in the world. It‘s entirely possible it may be
even fewer years than this, as much of our history is incomplete.

Consider the wars that have been fought during your lifetime.  From 1945 to 1993 there were 112 different
wars fought around the world - since that time I don‘t have the numbers, but there has been wars and fighting
almost constantly somewhere around the globe. Just look at what is taking place today  -  America‘s is at war with
two different countries, and Israel has been fighting the Palestinians, and there are conflicts in other parts of the
world as well.

In the past decade, America spent well over 4 trillion dollars on defense alone. That‘s enough money to feed
and clothe the whole world for one year.

Indeed, there are wars and rumors of war, and there is a fear with every passing day that we may get into
another war soon. All of this is a sign that Jesus is coming soon.

Then we see in verse seven, For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there
shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

We have seen nations rising against nation, and kingdoms against kingdoms, but what about the rest of this
verse, famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places?

There are some 786 million people in the world today who are suffering from acute or chronic hunger. That’s
almost one out of every six people on the earth,. Add to this the fact that there are more than one billion people
facing malnutrition, and two million more who are malnourished in some ways and we can see that hunger and
starvation is definately a provlema and famine is already with us.

One of my greatest fears is the way farmland is being turned into housing developments. I can‘t help but
wonder how long our farmers will be able to supply food for the ever-increasing population of the world when their
land is being turned into developments. What will happen if a serious drought hits America, which is very likely? If it
does, America will be faced with a serious famine, and starvation like other countries of the world are experiencing
right now. Yet, these are the things that the bible says must happen, and things that we see happening around us,
all of which is another sign that Jesus is coming soon.
Then we read of pestilences; This too is happening. Throughout the world, new and deadly diseases are striking
mankind. We have seen Cruise ships with people dying from a disease that spread through them. We are seeing
new diseases appearing, and old ones reappearing. Many of these diseases have become resistant to our
medications, and there is nothing we have to fight against them. Aids, Cancer, heart disease, and Diabetes has
become commonplace. Bird Flue is being transmitted from the birds to humans. So many pestilences are with us
and great suffering is prevalent, yet, this is another sign that Jesus is coming soon.

Then we see in verse seven about earthquakes in divers places. Before Jesus returns, there has to be an
increase of earthquakes, and they must be felt in places where they’ve never been felt before. Secondly, the
earthquakes must be stronger and more devastating. Folks, this too is happening, and it getting worse with each
passing year.

Because earthquakes and Natural disasters are so devastating, people from earliest times have recorded
them. Because of the fear and devastation that accompanies the quakes, people remember them and record the
details, so keeping records about earthquakes is not a new concept but indeed is very old.

Following is some startling statistics about earthquakes which took place over the past 100 years. Notice how
they have steadily increased, especially over the past 50 years. These are earthquakes that would measure at
least 6 on the rector scale, quakes large enough to bring devastation to a community and rip buildings apart,
quakes the size of the one that struck San Francisco several years ago during the World Series.

I will give the statistics in ten-year intervals starting at 1890.

[a]   From 1890 to 1899, there were two such quakes
[b]   From 1900 to 1910 there were two
[c]   From 1920 to 1930 there were two
[d]   From 1930 to 1940 there were five
[e]   From 1940 to 1950 there were four
[f]    From 1950 to 1960 there were nine
[g]   From 1960 to 1970 there were thirteen
      [h]   From 1970 to 1979 there were fifty-one
      [I]    From 1980 to 1989 there was eighty-six
[j]    From 1990 to 1994 there were over one hundred

My statistics stop in 1994 but earthquakes continue to increase and are getting stronger as time passes.
Today it is not uncommon to hear of a earthquake measuring 7, 8, or even 9 on the Rector scale, all of which are
signs that Jesus is coming soon.

There are many signs and wonders taking place around the world. We are seeing erthquakes, tornadoes,
hurricanes, crazy weather, and other things pointing to Christ coming, yet people keep getting wickeder with each
passing day as they continue to deny the existence and authority of God. I often wonder what it will take to
convince people to straighten up and follow Jesus. I wonder how many disasters God will send to try and convince
people that he‘s serious. I also wonder how long God‘s patience is going to hold out before he destroys the wicked.
How much longer will he allow man to profane his Holy Name and disregard his teaching? How much longer will he
allow the church to slip yet further away from his teaching. I can‘t help but believe  it won‘t be much longer.

But for now, those of us who believe in him, those of us who are followers of the true God must remain strong
and steadfast in his care. Around us, things are happening, there are wars, and rumors of war, there are kingdoms
rising against kingdom, and many are upset and uncertain about what they are to believe. Foreign countries are
trying to develop nuclear weapons, and America is trying to prevent it. Suicide Bombers are destroying themselves
along with many innocent people being killed along with them. We hear of tornadoes and hurricanes. We and hear
of tsunamis and other disasters. Some parts of the world is drying up whereas other parts are being flooded with
deep snows and too much rain. We are living in troubled times, in a time when people are suffering and many are
dying without knowing Jesus Christ as their savior.

We the followers of Jesus, must hold on to the hope that’s found in the bible, and we must diligently try to win
others for Jesus Christ. Last week I spoke on how many are being deceived, and how Satan is undermining the
word of God. We must hold fast to the truth and remain strong in our faith. The signs of Christ coming is evident in
every aspect of life, and without a doubt, he is coming soon. There‘s many who won‘t go to Heaven when he
comes. There‘s many who aren‘t prepared, many who are not his followers. There are many who choose to believe
the false doctrines and teaching Satan sends their way.

There are even those who don‘t believe Jesus is ever coming, believing that we will all eventually die and that
‘s the end. Others believe that everyone will go to heaven, no matter what they do or say, and no matter how they
live their lives. Some believe it was determined even before the foundations of the earth, who would go to heaven
and who would go to hell. There are so many who are deceived, and many who have false beliefs.

The bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and none are  righteous, no not one.
But God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, and whoever believes in him, will not perish, but will
have everlasting life. Folks, this is a wonderful promise to all who believe in him. To believe in something is to
believe absolutely, to believe without a doubt. To believe in something is to believe to the point that you will follow,
and refuse to do anything different. To believe in something is to sell yourself out, or give yourself totally to it. That
‘s what it means to believe in Jesus Christ.

All the signs point to his coming. His word tells us what the signs are, and it tells us how we can prepare for his
coming. The choice is ours. Will we be ready to meet him when he comes? Will we be prepared for his coming no
matter when, no matter how he comes for us? If we die in a hurricane or a tornado, will we be prepared to meet
Jesus? If close our eyes in death, will we be ready to go to heaven with him? If he comes to rapture the church
away, will we be prepared to go?

Christ is coming, when, I do not know. All I know for sure is that he‘s coming just like he said. When he comes, I
want to be found waiting and watching, and working for him. I want to be prepared, and stay prepared, so I won‘t
miss my only chance to make it into heaven.

Are you ready? Are you prepared? Jesus is coming soon.

Until next time, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved. AMEN
