“Choose Ye This Day”

July 6, 2011

Hello Friend! I'm Don Guthrie and I want to thank you for joining me today as we look into God’s Holy Word to
learn how we can become a more faithful followers of Christ, and a better witnesses to the world.

I would like to invite you to pray with me as I begin my message for this morning. Lord, I come before you this
day in the name of Jesus. I ask that you speak through me, and anoint our ears and heart that we may hear the
message you have for us today. Speak to us, and fill us with understanding that we might serve you fully. Amen!

While preparing for this message, I did a bit of research on various religions found in America. What I found
was disturbing. Here in America are found more different religious groups than anywhere else on earth. There are
so many of them, that it is impossible to get an accurate count of the different religions, or to determine what they
all believe.

I can tell you this, there’s a huge span of differences between them, ranging from Fundamental Bible believing
Christian Churches to Satan worship and from Denominational backed churches to practicing witches and
everything in between. There are some who worship Idols, and some who have multiple Gods and Deities. There
are those who worship nature, and some who worship Animals. There are even those who worship people
claiming to be God or Jesus Christ, and there who worship angels, and anything else you can imagine.

The Gallop survey group did a survey back in 2006 on Religion. From that survey, they determined that 42%
of all Americans attended weekly religious meetings. What it does not tell us is how many of those meetings are
Bible Believing Christian Churches.

One of the websites I looked at said that there are some 4,200 different religions being practiced. I don’t know
if this is correct, but I do know there are many, and almost all of them believe something different. What’s
interesting about them is that many of these religions believe their followers will go to heaven, or at least to a place
of eternal peace and happiness. Some of them believe hell, while others do not. Some of them believe what you
have here is all you’re going to get, while others, well, I don’t know what they believe.

With all the different religions and different beliefs, what is one to believe? Which book are we supposed to
follow, and what God are we to serve? Thinking of these questions, I am reminded of the time Joshua, was about
to die. Joshua was the leader of the Hebrew people. He took over leadership when Moses died, and it was he
who led the children of Israel into the Promised Land.

Shortly before he died, he gathered the Children of Israel together and reminded them of all that God had done
for them. Then he issued a challenge a challenge I to issue to you today, a challenge each of us must take
seriously if we want to someday be in heaven. That challenge is found in Joshua 24 and verse 15. Listen to the
words of this challenge.

Joshua 24:15
15. And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will
serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the
flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house,
    we will serve the LORD.

Or as this same verse reads in the Revised Standard Version:

15. And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the

This is a decision every one of us needs to make. We must determine in our heart and in our mind which God
we are going to serve. We must determine which book we are going to follow, and which religion is right. One
must understand when they choose, that there are many gods, gods with a little “g” gods who are false, and gods
who will lead you into an eternal hell, but there is only one God, God with a capital “G” who will lead you to
everlasting life and eternal peace.

The same holds true with the books. There are many books which have been written and all of them claim to
have the key to life, the key to happiness, and the key to heaven. But there is but one Bible, one book which is the
Holy Word of God. All others are fake, inspired by the prince of darkness, for the purpose of leading man away
from God to his demise. Only the WORD OF GOD, THE HOLY BIBLE has words that will bring you true
happiness and joy, and only it can lead you to heaven.

Most religions have a figurehead who is supposedly a divine being, or at least someone who was inspired by a
divine being that is responsible for starting the religion. Christianity is no different, but the divine being responsible
for starting Christianity really was divine.

The bible dates all the way back to the beginning of time, and gives us an account of how God created the
heavens and the earth. In the beginning he created man, and into that man he instilled a need to worship God.
Even so, there was a second person involved one of evil, named Satan. Satan desired that man worship him
instead of God. Since that time, there has been a struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil, trying
to get man to worship either God or Satan. That struggle is what we find in the Old Testament, along with the
religion that God himself started.

Time went on, and 2000 years ago, God sent his only begotten son into the world to die for the sins of all
mankind, and to start a new religion, one that is today called Christianity.

John 3:16 states
16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him
should not perish but have eternal life.

God the Father sent God the son to be born, live and die like we do. His purpose for coming was to become a
sacrifice for our sins, and to die a horrendous death of suffering and pain, to pay the penalty for our
transgressions. Christ died, and was buried, but on the third day he rose from the dead defeating hell, death and
the grave. Through his sacrifice, if we but believe, and follow his teaching we can have forgiveness for our sins,
and eternal life. Christ is the God of the New Testament.

Our religion was not started by man, it was started by God. God has been in it from the beginning, and is in it
today. As a matter of fact it is God in the form of the Holy Spirit that gives us inspiration, and does the work of
cleansing within our heart and soul. No other religion on earth can make the claims Christianity makes. No other
religion on earth was started, and preserved by God. Christianity is the only true religion, and the only way to have
eternal life. All other religions lead to an eternal everlasting hell. This is what the bible teaches, and this is what
will be. You must remember “God is not mocked, what you sow is what you reap.” Who and what you follow is
where you will spend your eternity.

15. And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the

    The choice is yours.

    Jesus said in John 14:6

John 14:6
6.   "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.

Jesus was and still is the Son of Almighty God. Three days after he died he rose from the dead. No other
religious leader did this and no one ever will. Only Jesus was able to defeat death and come out of the tomb to
become our risen savior. Forty days after he arose form the dead, Jesus ascended back to heaven where he now
sits at the right of God the Father, on his throne in the most honored position available.

No other religious leader ascended to heaven, and no other sits at the right hand of God. That space is totally
reserved for Jesus and it shows his authority. As he sits there, he intercedes for us. When we pray, he hears our
prayers and our pleas. When we sin he hears our pleas for forgiveness, and reminds the father that he died for
our sins. No other religious leader has become the intercessor for his followers. No other religious leader
sacrificed his own body so his followers could be forgiven, and no other religious leader rose from the dead. There
is but one and that is Jesus.

Consider today what this means for you. The one who started our religion, who sacrificed himself for us, and
who told us how to live, is still alive and well. He lives in the heart of all believers, and sent his Holy Spirit to guide
us to eternal life. What other religion offers such support or promise. The answer is, none. Only by following Jesus
can one make it to heaven. Only by believing in his Holy Word and choosing to follow him will one ever see
Heaven. All others will be cast into the fires of hell to suffer.

Folks it is time to choose. It is time to put aside all other beliefs and all other religions and start following Jesus
with your whole heart, and none other. It is time to begin studying the Holy Bible, and time to throw away all those
other books that tend to lead you away form what is true and righteous. But the decision is yours. Even so, I want
to warn you, if you choose not to follow the truth, and choose instead to follow other teaching or other teachers
other than Jesus, you will not be allowed into heaven and the alternative is eternal.

15. And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the

You must choose, to not make a choice is still a choice. Failing to choose Jesus is to choose hell instead. Do
not make this mistake.

You may be asking yourself, how can I choose to follow Jesus, when there are so many others following other
things? How can I know that Jesus is the right way, and his way will lead me to eternal life?

All I can tell you is this, History tells us that Jesus was an actual figure, and that he did live at the time the
bible tells us he lived. The Bible also speaks of things scientist just discovered in recent years, telling me that God
knows much more than man does. Furthermore, in Jerusalem, there’s an empty tomb where Jesus was buried.
There is no body there. If this is not convincing enough, seek God through prayer, and faithful reading of his Holy
Word. I can promise you, if you do, you will experience Jesus Christ, and he will make himself known unto you.

Find some good faithful Christian people and talk to them about Jesus. Watch their face when they talk about
him. See the truth in their face and in their eyes as they proclaim the goodness of Christ. If this doesn’t show you
what you need to know, stand beside the bed of a Christian who is suffering, and see how God gives them peace.
Watch as they die, and see the peace they have and sometimes even the joy on their face as Christ comes to take
them home to heaven. Then do the same for a non-believer. There is a huge difference between them. One has
peace and one has fear.

Allow Jesus into your heart and make him the lord of your life, and experience the joy that come form knowing
him. He said he would never leave us or forsake us, and folks believe me when I say, this is true. When one has
Jesus living in them, his presence is felt.

I beg of you this day to choose who you are going to serve. Will you choose one of the 4,000 plus religions of
the world, religions with no real hope, or will you choose the one true Religion and the one true religious leader,
Jesus Christ. Remember, the choice is yours, but the choice you make will determine where you spend your

Choose well.
