“PROVERBS”
LESSON NINE

Proverbs 4:14-15
   14. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
   15. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Verse 14 - Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

[A] If you remember, Solomon has been talking about seeking and following wisdom, He continues tonight with some
very good advice, in verse fourteen

[B] Enter not into the path of the wicked
[1] What does it mean to enter the path of the wicked
[a] To follow the path of the wicked would be to fall in with sinner or to fall into sin
[b] To fall into the path of the wicked is to start doing the same things wicked people are doing
[2] One must be very careful not to allow themselves to get caught up in sin or to associate to freely with a sinner
[a] What happens when one gets involved deeply with a sinner?
[b] What happens when a godly man starts walking with a wicked person?

[C] Go not in the way of evil men.
           Psalm 1
           1.   Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way
of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
           2.   But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
           3.   And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his
season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
           4.   The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
           5.   Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of
                 the righteous.
           6.   For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
[1] When one is around the wicked, they must be well grounded in their faith, lest the wicked influence them
[2] A week Christian, should not allow themselves to be around non Christians for long periods of time, for that
matter neither should a strong one.
[a] Even Christ went away by himself to pray and commune with God

Verse 15 - Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

[A] The advice of Solomon is to avoid wickedness altogether
[1] Why should one avoid being around something that is wicked?
[2] What is the problem with being places where wickedness is practiced?

[B] Solomon says we should not even pass by wickedness
           [1] Why?

   [C] Turn from it
[1] When one knows wickedness is at a particular place, Solomon says we
                   [a] Should turn from it
[b] Go in a different direction
[c] Stay away from it altogether
[2] What he is saying is
[a] Don’t put yourself in a position where you might be tempted.
[b] If you know wickedness exists somewhere, stay away, and avoid the temptation of even looking upon it.
[c] In Old Testament times, the people were taught not to even look upon a false God.
[d] What is the problem with looking at something, or listening to it, or being around Evil
[1-a] Evil has a way of impressing itself on our mind even though we do not desire it to be.
[2-a] When one looks at something, the image they look at is burned on their mind and retained in their
                                   memory forever
[3-a] When on hears something, they might not recall it but what they heard is in their mind, and it to is
                                   retained forever.
[4-a] To protect oneself, one must not place themselves in a position where they have to hear, see or
                                   experience evil

Proverbs 4:16-17 - For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause
some to fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

[A] Men have to sleep, but evil never sleeps

[B] No matter what time of the day or night, Satan and his followers are always ready to expend their evil on us.
[1] There is never a time we should let our guard down
[2] There is never a time we should be our from under the protection of God
[3] There is never a time we should not be prayed up and ready to do battle against Satan

[C] When one lets their guard down, and thinks that all is well, is the time they are tripped up and they will fall

Proverbs 4:18 - But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

   [A] What does this mean?

[B] Good, honest Christian people stand out in a community
           [1] They are respected
[2] They are looked up too
           [3] They stand out
[4] They are a shining example of Christ

Proverb 4:19
   19. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

[A] Notice how much what Solomon is saying compares to Psalm 1 that David wrote

       Psalm 1:4-5
           4.   The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
           5.   Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

   [B] Questions
[1] How is the wicked as darkness?
           [2] Why do they stumble?

Proverbs 4:20-22

   22. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

Verse 20 - My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

[A] What find words to live by: when thinking about the words of our Heavenly Father
           [1] Attend to my words
[a] God’s words do us absolutely no good unless we adhere to them and do what they say
[b] The bible says we are to be doers of the word, and not hearers only
           [2] Incline thine ear
[a] Listen to hear what God has to tell you
[b] Listen to what God says through others
[c] It has been said that if one reads the bible out loud, they learn more because they not only see it, they
                           hear it as well

Verse 21 - Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

[A] Let them not depart from thine eyes
[1] We are to keep our eyes focused on Jesus
[2] We should be diligently looking for the signs of his coming
[3] We should have his laws and will in the forefront of our life at all times
[4] As the Hebrew people were told, they were to hang them on the doorpost of their home, so they would always
                   be remembered

[B] Keep them in the midst of thine heart
[1] When on has they wisdom of God in their heart, it has become a part of their life.
[2] When something is in the heart, it is done without conscious thought

Verse 22 - For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

[A] How can the wisdom and knowledge of God be life to them who find it?

                 blasphemies:
[1] What a person has in their heart, is what you hear them saying, and what they are doing
[a] If a person praises God, they praise is in their heart
[b] If they take the Lord name in vain, there is cursing in their heart
[b] If on commits murder, than murder is in the heart
[c] And the list can go on and on
[2] Something has to be in ones heart in order to be tempted by it

               James 1:13-14
                   13. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be
tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
                   14. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
