“PROVERBS”
LESSON SEVEN

Proverbs 3:21-26
     21. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
     22. So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
     23. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
     24. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
     25. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
     26. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Verse 21 - My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

[A] The writer of the Proverbs, is continuing to talk about Wisdom and Knowledge

[B] Here he tells us to beware wisdom and knowledge does not depart from our eyes
[1] What is he saying here?
[2] Never forget that God, who is the author of nature, directs and governs all things
[a] It is God who is in charge not we whom he created
[b] It is God who is on control, not we whom he created
[d] God has a plan we know nothing of, and we as part of his creation are to be obedient, keeping our
eyes on him, and leaving the rest up to God
[3] We have been talking in the past lessons about how all true wisdom and knowledge come from God.
[a] What Solomon is saying is that we are not to depart from God, or the teaching of God
[b] It is after all God who has wisdom, and knowledge, and us who has only the wisdom and knowledge
                             that we impart from him
[c] If we keep our eyes on God, and do what he tells us to do, we will be walking in wisdom and
knowledge, and will have nothing to fear.

[C] Keep sound wisdom and discretion
[1] This is what I have just been saying, if we keep our eyes on God, and walk in his knowledge and wisdom,
we will not depart from wisdom and we will use discretion in all that we do

Verse 22 - So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck

[A] Again Solomon is referring to Wisdom and Knowledge we get from God

[B] They shall be life to your soul
[1] It will lift you up and give you a boost when you begin to become slothful and remiss
[a] Have you ever felt the Spirit nudging you when you fail to pray, fail to read your bible, or start slipping
                             away from God?
[2] It will boost you up when you start to droop and despair
[a] The wisdom and knowledge of God will carry you through anything trouble and any problem you may
                             encounter
[b] The knowledge of God and his word, will boost you up when you are down, and give you strength in a
                             time of weakness
[3] Knowing God, and having his wisdom imparted to you, having the knowledge of what Christ did for you, and
keeping your eyes on the promises and on God, will be life to your soul, and carry you through to you get
                     to heaven

[C] It will be grace to you neck
[1] It will be like a gold chain around your neck, always there to remind you that God is with you and you have
                     nothing to fear

Verse 23 - Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

[A] When one has their eyes on Jesus, and they walk in the knowledge of God,
[1] They will walk safely in their way
[a] With Christ guiding your life and step, and with your eyes on him,
[1-a] He will keep you from stumbling
[2-a] He will keep you safe
                     [b] When following Christ
[1-a] Satan will try to pull you away and get you to follow him
[2-a] Satan will put obstacles in your path
[3-a] You will be tried and tested
[c] But when you keep the wisdom and knowledge of God in your eyes and on your
heart, and allow Christ to lead you, you will be able to walk through the valley
and shadow of death and fear no evil
[2] Thy foot will not stumble
[a] Satan will test us, but if we hold tight to Christ and rely on his wisdom and
knowledge we can make it and not stumble
[b] It is when we rely on self, or others that we stumble, and fall

Verse 24 - When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be
     sweet.

[A] When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid
[1] When a man is at peace with God, and his fellowmen, he has nothing to fear.
[2] When we are in harmony with Christ and are walking with him, he will watch over us, and we need not be
                     afraid.
[3] If everything is right with God, even the though of lying down and never waking up is nothing to fear

[B] Thy sleep shall be sweet
[1] Knowing that all is well with your soul, and Jesus is with you, and you with him allows you to lie down at night
                     and sleep peacefully
[2] Knowing that you have nothing to fear, that were you to die in your sleep you would be with Christ, again
                     allows you to sleep peacefully
[3] Casting all your cares and woes on Christ, takes away the worry and again allows you to sleep peacefully

Verse 25- 26
     25. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh
     26. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

[A] Even in the worst situation
[1] We do not need to be afraid
[2] Even when facing death, we need not fear, because our soul is right with God and we know where we will
                     spend our eternity

[B] When we have our eyes on the wisdom and knowledge of God, and that wisdom and knowledge has become a
part of our life and soul, we can have confidence in Christ that our soul is going to be with him, and that we
             have nothing to fear.
[1] We can than proclaim what Paul wrote in II Corinthians 5:8, “to be absent from the body is to be present
                     with God.”
[2] Or what he said in Philippians 1:21 - “To live is Christ but to die is gain.”

[C] Knowing Christ, and knowing his wisdom and knowledge takes away all fear, and allows us to live our live for him.

Proverbs 3:27-28
     27. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
     28. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

[A] Withhold not good from them to whom it is due
             [1] What does this mean
