PROVERBS
LESSON EIGHTEEN

Proverbs 8:22-31
     22. The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
     23. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
     24. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with
            water.
     25. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
     26. While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
     27. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
     28. When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
     29. When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he
appointed the foundations of the earth:
     30. Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before
           him;
     31. Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Verse 22 - The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old

[A] Here again we are speaking of Wisdom
[1] Wisdom is not acquired by God - He possessed it from the beginning
             [2] On the other hand
                     [a] Man must learn wisdom
                     [b] Angels must learn wisdom
[c] Both learn wisdom by slow and progressive degrees, a little a time
[3] God is wisdom, and from him we learn wisdom

[B] Before anything was, God already existed, and his wisdom was present even then
[1] When one looks at the creation, at all the things God made, it is evident the great wisdom that
                     God possesses
[2] What little we know about anything has been revealed to us by God, yet what man knows is
only a tiny speck compared to the vast amount of knowledge and wisdom God possesses.
[a] I have often heard people asking what they would be doing in heaven, and what they
would do to occupy their time.
[b] I believe the wisdom and Glory of God will be so great that we will spend our eternity
learning, and seeing the wonders of God as they are manifest to us slowly. It will
have to be shown to us over a period of a long time, because our mind will not
comprehend all God has to show us, if shown to quickly.

Verse 23 - I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

[A] Long before God created the heaven and the earth, long before he created the angels
[1] He poured out his wisdom,
[2] He laid down the process by which the angels and man could begin to learn wisdom from
                     him.

Verse 24 - When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with
     water.

[A] The wisdom of God was present, his great and vast knowledge was present before anything existed

[B] Before he made the first thing, he knew how,

[C] Before there was a star in the sky, or any planets, God had already poured out his wisdom.

Verse 25 - Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

[A] Before there was a mountain, or a hill, wisdom was already available,
[1] The angels were already learning
[2] They were gaining wisdom form God

Verse 26 - While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

[A] If you take notice, I have been saying all along that you can replace the word wisdom with Jesus and
             you have the same thing
[1] Wisdom - Christ was with God from the beginning  even from the time before anything was
                     made.
[2] Christ - like wisdom was not created, is a part of God, and is God

Verse 27 - When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

[A]  In every aspect of Creation, Wisdom was present.

[B] Wisdom - Christ - was actually who formed the worlds, and did the creating

Verse 28-29 -
     28. When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
     29. When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he
appointed the foundations of the earth:

[A] Wisdom was present during every aspect of creation

     [B] What wonders me is:
[1] Wisdom has been present forever
[2] Wisdom was present throughout the creation
[3] Wisdom is recorded in the Bible for us so that we can gain wisdom and know the God created
                     everything
[4] Yet today, man claims to have more wisdom than God, as they deny the very words of
                     wisdom God gave us
[5] Man claims everything just happened - that there is no God
[a] What has happened to wisdom?
[b] Why are man so foolish

Verse 30 -Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before         him;

[A] In the first chapter of John, John calls Jesus the word
[1] The word of God is Christ who came to live among man
[2] The word of God is wisdom

[B] Wisdom inspired the bible writers to write the word of God in a book
[1] The word is wisdom on the pages of our Holy Bible
[2] The words is Christ’s wisdom poured out for man so we can understand him and know the
                     way to heaven

[C] Who better to give us wisdom than he who was with the Father before the beginning?

Verse 31 - Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

[A] The greatest of all God’s creatures is man - and in man God finds his greatest delight

[B] When God creature - man , accepts his wisdom, and seeks more,
             [1] God is pleased
[2] He gives man more wisdom
[3] He opens him mind for more knowledge
[4] He pours out his Spirit on him

Proverbs 8:32-36
     32. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
     33. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
     34. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
     35. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
     36. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Verse 32 - Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

    Psalms 1
     1.   Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners,
nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
     2.   But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
     3.   And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
     4.  The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
     5.  Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the
           righteous.
     6.   For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

[A] The wise man or woman is he who harkens unto God and follows his commandments concerning
             them

[B] Wisdom - Christ calls out to us to hearken him
[1] He who does not hearken unto man or the teaching of man, is he who is blesses
[2] He who keeps the ways of Christ is he who is blessed eternally for they are those who will
                     spend their eternity in heaven
[3] Those who refuse to keep the commandments of Christ, and refuse wisdom are like the chaff
which the wind blows away, they are cast aside and burned.
[4] Only those who follow wisdom, and adhere to the teaching of Christ shall enter into heaven.

Verse 33 - Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

[A] First of all, we must be willing to listen to wisdom
[1] Unless we have an open heart and mind God cannot speak his instructions to us
[2] Unless we want to hear, God’s instructions fall on deft ears and do us no good

[B] We must be wise - and know that God is speaking to us,
[1] Not all we learned is from God
[2] Not all we have been taught is Godly
[3] Not all the things we enjoy are things God would have us doing
[4] We must be wise and know that God’s ways are not our ways, therefore we must be willing to
                     listen and learn

[C] Most importantly, we must not refuse instruction
             [1] No-one knows everything.
[2] Each of us has much to learn
             [3] God’s wisdom is eternal
[4] God’s word is alive and he is continually revealing more understanding to us, each time we
                     read and study it.

Verse 34 - Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

[A] Blessed is the man that heareth the instructions of God
[1] Hearing and doing the will of God places one on the proper path,
[2] When one is a hearer and a doer, they can lay their head on their pillow and sleep a sleep of
                     peacefulness
[3] There heart is pure, and their mind in on Christ

[B] The wise man, reads and studies God’s word,
             [1] He believes the word,
[2] He strives to live the word
[a] In other words he watches daily at the Gates of heaven
[b] He waits at the door of God’s house, knowing they may open and the invitation to
enter given, and he don’t what to miss it.

Verse 35 - For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

[A] Those who find wisdom - Christ - finds eternal life

[B] Those who find Christ finds favour with God
             [1] They are saved,
[2] They are given eternal life
[4] They are adopted into the family of God
             [5] They are eternally blessed

Verse 36 -  But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

[A] He that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul -
[1] He that sinneth against Christ, or against wisdom wrong the his own soul
[2] All sin, no matter whether it is a big one or a small one is a sin against God
[3] Un-confessed sins are sins against one’s own soul
[a] Why is this statement true?
[4] Un-confessed sin places one’s soul in jeopardy with God
[a] God sent his only son to die for the sins of all mankind
[b] Jesus suffered and died for the sins of man
[c] One must believe in him, and seek his forgiveness for their sins
[d] If one does not believe in him, they will never seek forgiveness
[e] If one never seeks forgiveness, they cannot enter the kingdom of heaven - for only by
placing our sins under the blood of Christ can one be saved

[B] All they that hate me love death
[1] Those who “hate” Christ are those who refuse to accept his free gift and turn from their
                     wicked ways
[a] Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments
[2] Those who do not love Christ does not keep his commandments
[3] To not love him is to hate him.
[a] There is no other category.
[b] There is no other name under heaven by which one can be saved
[c] You either accept him or you deny him
[d] To accept him is to believe fully in him
[e] To believe fully in him, is to obey him completely
[f] If one believes in him, loves him and obeys him, there is no room in their lives for sin
[g] We are to love the Lord with all our heart mind soul and strength.
[h] To love Christ is life
[i] To hate him is death
