PROVERBS
LESSON SIXTEEN

Proverbs 7:24-27
     24. Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
     25. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
     26. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
     27. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

We are about to look at the conclusion of the story, or the account that we studied last week. If you remember,
last time we looked at how the young man had went with his friends to a location where a prostitute lived, and
while there she seduced him. We compared the woman to any sinful thing, and talked of how Satan is lurking
around every corner trying to draw people into his web of sin. We also looked at how one can only be tempted if
they have a lust in their heart for something. This brings us to our study for tonight.

Verse 24 - Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

[A] Hearken unto me now therefore
[1] Take good counsel when it is given you
[2] Listen to good advice when someone is trying to help you
[3] Why suffer learning about something if someone else who has been there can tell you what
                    not to do.

[B] Herein lies the problem with the youth of today, and for that matter, even many who are not youth
[1] Far too many when they hear advice being given refuse to listen, because they think they
                    know it all
[2] The advice giver is often considered outdated or out of touch
[3] There is that feeling of you made your mistakes, let me make mine.
[4] Even in church this same problem exists.
[a] Most folks have a limited understanding of the bible
[b] They have picked and chosen what things they want to believe or not
[c] Many follow the teachings they have heard in the past without ever reading or
studying to find out if they are correct
[d] When a preacher or teacher tells them something different than what they want to
here, they get mad and refuse to listen.

[C] Whether or not one wants to believe the truth does not change the fact that the truth is still true

Verse 25 - Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths

[A] In regards to the harlot for last week, of for that matter, in regards to any sinful thing Satan is
            tempting us with, Solomon warns.
[1] don’t let your heart be deceived by it,
[2] Don’t let your mind wander towards it.
[3] Don’t let sin cause you to go astray

[B] The lust of one’s heart can easily cause one to forget what they ought to be doing with their life.
[1] When one has lust in their heart, and temptation is placed before them, that lust begins to
grow, and before long, the mind which should be telling us to stop, gets in league with
the heart and we fall into sin.
[2] Lust and desire causes reasoning to go out the window, and allows sin to take hold of us

Verse 26 - For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

[A] She hath cast down many wounded
[1] Sin preys on the week,
[2] Satan watches and knows when we are at our weakest point, and then he moves in
[a] Husband and wife are having problems, and Satan sends another man or woman into the
picture for the purpose of just talking and being a friend. Unfortunately, that other person
can soon become more than someone to talk to, they become the person who listens, who
cares, and eventually can lead to a sexual encounter justified on one’s mind because your
mate is not giving you what you need.
[b] You are having financial difficulties, and cannot make ends meet. Satan places things in front
of you that can be easily stolen, to help you fulfill your financial Struggles
[c] You are hurting, discouraged, and really feeling down on everything. Satan places
drugs, alcohol and so on in your path to calm your nerves and drown your
                            sorrows in
[d] Your having a terrible bad day. Satan sends more misery in the form of a family
member or friend that gets under your skin and places your teeth on edge, you
get so upset that you begin cursing and taking God’s name in vain
[e] Life gets so bad and it seems that none of your prayers are answered. Satan will try
his best to convince you that God doesn’t care so why try

[B] Many strong men have been slain by her

[1] Don’t get the false impression that only the week will fall, for Solomon states that
many strong men have been slain by her
[a] Given the right circumstances, at the right place and time, and even the strongest
man or woman can fall and do thing they never dreamed they would do
[b] Never say, I’ll never, instead say with the help of God I won’t
[2] Often the strong get it into their heads that they are above sin, and temptation
[a] There opinion is that nothing can bother them
[b] They feel they are above the wiles of Satan
[c] They sometimes feel that God will keep them from sinning, yet what happened to
                            Job
[1-a] God called Satan’s attention to Job and allowed him to be tested

Verse 27 - Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

[A] Her house is the way to hell
[1] Here Solomon is warning the young man that going to the prostitutes house, and having a
relationship with her is the way to hell
                    [a] Why is this?
[b] Why is the house of the prostitute the way to hell?
[c] What sins are being committed?
[2] I would like to expand on this and say that all sin is the way to hell.
[a] Is this an accurate statement?
[b] Why is sin so enticing?

Proverbs 8:1-9
     1.   Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
     2.   She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
     3.   She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
     4.   Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
     5.   O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
     6.   Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
     7.   For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
     8.   All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
     9.   They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

[A] God’s word is two-fold, and, in both senses, it is wisdom
[1] A a word without wisdom is of little value to anyone
[a] On can speak all day long to others, but if there is no wisdom in their words, their
                            speech is for nothing
[b] On the other hand, if on speaks a few words of wisdom, it is worth more than
                    anything else they might say
[2] Wisdom without a word is of little use as well
[a] If one has wisdom and refuses to tell it to others, what good is their wisdom
[3] Wisdom is intended to be shared with others so that all might become wise

[B] The wisdom of God is given to us through his Holy word,
[1] What is the purpose of God’s Word?
[2] Why does God want us to have his wisdom?

Verses 1-4

[A] Another way of saying this would be,
[1] Doesn’t God give us his wisdom
[2] Doesn’t God show us his truths even in nature
[3] Godly wisdom is available to everyone, it cries out to them, seeking for them to
                            Understand

    [B] Questions
[1] Does God’s wisdom warn men of what they are doing, and tell them it is wrong?
[2] Does wisdom cry out to all mankind, seeking for them to understand?
[3] Why does man refuse to listen to God’s wisdom calling out to them?

Verse 5 - O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

[A] O ye simple, understand wisdom
[1] It is a fact that often the so called wisest among us, are the slowest to learn true wisdom -
                    the wisdom of God
[a] The learned, often have a problem accepting the things of God
[b] The unlearned on the other hand do not have a problem believing God and the
                            things of God
[2] I happened upon a show on TV this week, where they were trying to show when the
dinosaurs and other life forms ceased to exist. They stated that this tool place like 2
million years ago, after which certain life forms repopulated the earth. Their argument
was based on a layer of volcanic ash, and residue which is found all over the earth, under which
are found the bones of many of the animals we no longer have among us. What they fail to
understand or acknowledge is when the flood covered the earth, there were volcanoes and the
such which reshaped the earth, and covered everything along with the waters which drowned all
those who were left on the earth. Animals, such as lizards and snakes, continue to grow as long
as they live, and before the flood man and animals lived for over 900 years in some cases,
therefore what we see today as a lizard was then a monster, living in an environment which was
very different then what we know today. Scientist refuse to admit to this because to admit to it
would be to admit that there is a god. What the scientist on TV was showing to try and prove his
point was where a different type of rock was laid down on another type. For an unlearned person
like myself it is easy to see that the new rock is rock that was laid down when the flood covered
the earth, nothing more and nothing less

[B] Ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart
[1] Those who are highly educated call us who believe in God and in his word a fool. They
believe us to be unlearned and uneducated

[2] Truth be known, it is we who are wise, and they who are foolish, for they believe the
things of Satan instead of the things of God, therefore we need to have an
understanding heart, and pray for their deliverance from evil, and we must beware that
we do not fall into evil ourselves.

Verses 6-7
     6.   Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
     7.   For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

[A] Wisdom - God - speaketh excellent things
[1] If one listens to what God has to tell us, we will become wise beyond measure,
[2] What greater wisdom is there than to Know God and know how to get to heaven

[B] True wisdom, Godly wisdom speaks only truths, whereas ungodly wisdom speaks foolishness
which will eventually lead you away from God and put you on the path to an eternal hell

[C] I would hope that you and I could say what Solomon wrote,
[1] My mouth will speak only the truth
[2] Wickedness is an abomination to my lips

Verse 8-9
     8.   All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
     9.   They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

[A] The words of God are all righteousness,
[1] There is nothing in God‘s word that is false or perverse
[2] God’s word is righteousness, and truth
[3] It is the roadmap to show us how to get to God

[B]  They are all plain to him that understand
[1] When one chooses to follow God, and believe what the bible says about him - things begin
to become plain to you, and understanding flows into your heart
[2] Those who want to go to heaven but refuse to turn from the world and follow Christ on the
other hand are blinded to understanding

[C] When on places his trust in God, and receives his understanding,
[1] They see the rightness in what God tells them
[2] They understand why God wants us to do certain things
[3] They grasp the importance of obedience

Verses 10-11
     10. Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
     11. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to
           it.

[A] To receive instruction from God is better then someone giving you vast amounts of silver
            [1] Why is this?

[B] To gain knowledge from God is better than having the finest gold
            [1]  Why is this?

[C] He concludes by saying that there is noting better than gaining wisdom, not just any wisdom, but
true wisdom, which comes from the knowledge of God.
            [1] Why is this true?
